Frederic Moll, M.D. serves as the president and CEO for Hansen Medical. He co-founded the company in 2002, bringing with him more than 20 years of medical device and high technology experience. Dr. Moll has served as the company’s CEO and a director since the company’s inception in September 2002, and he became president in March 2009. In 1995, Dr. Moll founded Intuitive Surgical Inc., and served as the company’s first CEO. Intuitive Surgical is the world leader in surgical robotics and is a publicly traded company on NASDAQ. Prior to Intuitive Surgical, Dr. Moll co-founded Origin Medsystems, Inc., which later became an operating company within Guidant Corporation following the acquisition by Eli Lily in 1992. Dr. Moll served as medical director of Guidant’s Surgical Device Division from 1992 – 1995. Before co-founding Origin Medsystems, Dr. Moll invented the safety trocar, which fostered in modern general laparoscopic surgery, and he founded Endotherapeutics, which was acquired by U.S. Surgical in 1992. Dr. Moll holds a bachelor of arts in economics from the University of California at Berkeley, a masters of science in management from Stanford University, and a medical degree from the University of Washington. Dr. Moll is a distinguished speaker and lecturer, and is the author of numerous scientific articles. He currently serves on the boards of several Silicon Valley healthcare companies.
Federico Barbagli, Ph.D., first joined Hansen Medical in 2004 as a senior staff engineer. In this role, he was responsible for the design of all visualization, imaging and high level robotics capabilities of the Sensei® Robotic Catheter System. In 2007, Dr. Barbagli was promoted to Senior Fellow. In this role, he was responsible for all advanced development activities on the Sensei product line, as well as the software, test and visualization groups. Dr. Barbagli now serves as CTO for Hansen Medical. Before joining the company, Dr. Barbagli was an assistant professor at the University of Siena, Italy. Since 2007, he has been a consulting professor in the Computer Science Department at Stanford. Dr. Barbagli holds a Ph.D. in robotics from Scuola Superiore S. Anna in Italy and was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Stanford Robotics Laboratory. Dr. Barbagli is the author of a book and has published more than 20 articles in International Journals.
Dan Bradford joined Hansen Medical in 2006 as director of engineering program management. Since joining Hansen Medical, Bradford was also responsible for Catheter Engineering. Bradford brings with him 23 years of experience within the medical device industry. Prior to joining Hansen Medical, he was director of program management at Kyphon and engineering program director at Siemens Medical Solutions Ultrasound Division. Bradford also held management positions in marketing, field operations and corporate quality at Acuson Corporation. Bradford received a bachelor of science in business administration from San Diego State University.
Christopher R. Carlson joined Hansen Medical in June 2004, and has held the position of vice president of engineering since July 2009. Previously at Hansen Medical, Dr. Carlson was responsible for the Control Systems, Software, Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering Groups. He was also responsible for the leadership of advanced applications projects as well as the system architecture and safety architecture for the Sensei® Robotic Catheter System. Dr. Carlson received a bachelor of science in mechanical engineering from the University of California at Davis, and a masters of science and a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from Stanford University.
Arthur Hsieh joined Hansen Medical in April 2008 as chief patent counsel, and assumed responsibility for the legal department in December 2008. In addition to managing Hansen Medical’s expanding intellectual property portfolio, he also has broad responsibilities in general legal matters including corporate, licensing and compliance activities. Previously, Dr. Hsieh was director of intellectual property for Kyphon Inc. (part of Medtronic as of November 2007), where he was responsible for expanding the company’s patent portfolio, and had successfully managed multiple patent litigations in the U.S. and foreign jurisdictions. Dr. Hsieh was also responsible for IP clearance and supported the introduction of multiple products into the market. In addition, he played an instrumental role in the $725 million acquisition of St. Francis Medical Technologies by Kyphon, and the $4.2 billion sale of Kyphon to Medtronic. Before joining Kyphon, Dr. Hsieh was an attorney at Morrison & Foerster LLP, where he concentrated on domestic and international patent prosecution, intellectual property strategic planning, technology licensing and technology litigation. Dr. Hsieh received a bachelor of science in electrical engineering and molecular biology from the University of Wisconsin, a masters of science and a Ph.D. in biomedical engineering from the University of Southern California and a juris doctor from Boston University.
Ken Husted joined Hansen Medical in December 2008 as vice president of sales covering the southeast, southwest and the western United States. He was promoted to vice president of U.S. commercial operations in October 2009. Husted brings with him 22 years of experience in medical device sales and sales management. Before joining Hansen Medical, he held various sales and sales management positions with Intuitive Surgical, Inc., over a seven-year period. Prior to Intuitive Surgical, Husted served in sales and sales operations roles with McKesson, Hill-Rom, Southeastern Medical Supply and Tyco Associates. His background includes expertise in building high-powered sales organizations, strategic selling and medical device market development. Husted received a bachelor of science in business administration and management from Troy State University.
Robert Mittendorff joined Hansen Medical in June 2008 as director of business development after previously consulting for the company. Dr. Mittendorff has been responsible for Hansen Medical’s development and commercial partnerships as well as the marketing organization. He has prior experience in the device, pharmaceutical and biotech industries including experience at venture startups, Merck & Co., Inc. and the Boston Consulting Group. He has worked in strategic, business development and marketing capacities. Dr. Mittendorff received his bachelor of science in biomedical and electrical engineering from Johns Hopkins University with general and departmental honors. He received a masters in business administration from Harvard Business School and he received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School. Dr. Mittendorff completed his residency training in the Department of Surgery, Division of Emergency Medicine at Stanford University. He also completed fellowships under the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, MIT Sloan School of Management, Harvard Business School, and he has been published in policy and scientific journals.
Peter Osborne joined Hansen Medical as interim chief financial officer in February 2010. Osborne brings with him almost 30 years of broad business experience in financial operations management, business process improvement and strategic corporate finance. Prior to this, Osborne served as chief financial officer, treasurer and vice president of finance and administration of VNUS Medical Technologies, Inc. He played an instrumental role in the sale of VNUS to Covidien PLC in June 2009. Previously, Osborne served as global revenue controller for Mercury Interactive when the company was acquired by HP in February 2007. Before joining Mercury Interactive, Osborne had served in many senior financial leadership roles for a number of companies including Sanmina-SCI, Optillion AB and Neopolitan Networks. He also served in various positions including partner at Deloitte & Touche LLP. Osborne holds a bachelor of science with honors in operations research and a bachelor of commerce in finance and statistics from the University of Cape Town.
Roland Peplinski joined Hansen Medical in 2009 as general manager of Europe, Middle East, Africa, Asia Pacific and Canada. He brings with him 19 years of sales experience in the international medical device industry. Prior to joining Hansen Medical, Dr. Peplinski worked with Intuitive Surgical, Inc., where he was responsible for European Sales for five years. Before joining Intuitive Surgical, he was vice president of European Operations for Transneuronix Inc., a company that treats obesity with implantable gastric stimulators. His background includes knowledge in the fields of interventional cardiology, cardiac surgery, obesity surgery and treatment, gynecology and urology. Dr. Peplinski received a bachelor of science in biology and physical education from the University Siegen, Germany, and a masters in business administration and a Ph.D. in economics from the Technical University of Ostrau, Germany.
Frank Schembri joined Hansen Medical in March 2007 as senior director of manufacturing in charge of all aspects of catheter and systems operations. He was promoted to vice president of manufacturing in July 2009. Schembri brings with him more than 25 years of leadership experience in design engineering and manufacturing to his role at Hansen Medical. Schembri has held technical and manufacturing management positions at BD Biosciences, Siemens Medical, Acuson Corporation, Resonex and Varian Associates. Schembri received a bachelor of science in engineering technology from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, and he is a registered professional engineer in California.
Dan Wallace joined Frederic Moll, M.D., in 2002 to co-found Hansen Medical, where he is the vice president of regulatory and clinical affairs. Prior to this, Wallace directed the creation and development of the robotic instruments at Intuitive Surgical, Inc., and he was responsible for the group who designed, released and manufactured a suite of 13 robotically controlled surgical instruments. Before joining Intuitive Surgical, Wallace designed laparoscopic instruments for Origin MedSystems, as well as implantable high-fidelity hearing aids for Symphonic Devices. He also worked as a flight controller in Houston Mission Control for the Space Shuttle program. Wallace received a bachelor of science in mechanical engineering from Rice University, and a masters of science in mechanical engineering from Stanford University.
Rob Younge joined Frederic Moll, M.D., in 2002 to co-found Hansen Medical, where he served as the CTO. In April 2006, he was appointed Principal Fellow. Younge now serves as the company’s corporate advisor. Prior to joining Hansen Medical, Younge co-founded Intuitive Surgical Inc. in 1995, and held the position of CTO. In 1979, Younge co-founded Acuson Corporation, a leading ultrasound developer and manufacturer, where he served as the company’s vice president of engineering from 1979 – 1989. In 1991, Younge became the general manager of Acuson’s transducer division, where he played a strategic role in introducing the company’s first flexible endoscopic ultrasound transducers. Younge holds both a bachelor’s and masters of science in electrical engineering from Stanford University.
