Unique, State of the Art Procedure for Treatment of Atrial Fibrillation

Realizing the Potential of Robotics

At Hansen Medical, we understand that patients are becoming more involved in their own care and would like to understand their options when it comes to diagnosis and treatment of arrhythmias, specifically atrial fibrillation (AF). We strive to serve as a reliable resource for patients to learn more about different types of arrhythmias and explore options available to them, including catheter-based procedures. Until recently, patients who were diagnosed with irregular heartbeats faced the prospect of a diminished quality of life involving a life-long regime of drug-based therapies to manage their arrhythmia. Today, they have access to more immediate interventions such as our flexible robotic approach.

According to the European Society of Cardiology, Atrial fibrillation (AF or A-fib) is the most common type of cardiac arrhythmia (abnormal or irregular heart rhythm), affecting nearly 4.5 million Europeans. The number of patients diagnosed with AF is expected to increase even more due to an aging population, a rising number of people with chronic heart disease, and improved diagnostic technologies. AF is associated with increased long-term risk for severe and disabling stroke, and it is estimated that 15 to 20 percent of strokes occur in people with AF. Additionally, it increases the risk of heart failure and all causes of death, especially in women.

Through continued advancement of medical robotics, Hansen Medical has developed a next generation minimally-invasive, robotic catheter placement solution for AF, the Sensei® X Robotic Catheter System. This system may improve both the physician and patient experience through more stable catheter placement, overcoming the limitations of manual technique. This unique, state of the art technology is powered by a highly accurate, robotically controlled arm that allows for catheter navigation, stability and positioning within the chamber of the heart, allowing for the following patient advantages:

  • Shorter procedure times
  • Reduced exposure to X-ray radiation
  • Potential for improvements in efficacy
  • Navigation with superior stability and control
