Careers at Hansen Medical
Senior/Principal Catheter Engineer
SUMMARY:
The successful applicant will lead the design and development of next generation steerable catheters. This role involves pushing the limits of current catheter technology to provide greater flexibility, lower profiles and access to difficult anatomy. This involves exploring new catheter architectures and technologies that will become the foundation for future products. The role includes understanding clinical applications, ideation, generation of design concepts and optimization based on an appropriate mix of analysis, prototyping and testing. This will be followed by detailed engineering and testing to ensure requirements are met. The position involves working to aggressive timescales on technically complex products.
The role is a great opportunity for you if you are passionate about catheter design, want to work at the leading edge of steerable catheter technology and are looking for career development. You have significant experience optimizing catheter tracking performance including flexibility, pushability and torsional response. You have dealt with the challenges of getting catheters where doctors want them to go and you are driven and motivated to help give them even greater access to further parts of the anatomy. Have you thought about what your options may be if you could control the bending of certain sections of the catheter? You will now have the ability to add robotic controlled steering capability in multiple directions and join a team of world class engineers and strengthen our position as the global leader in flexible robotics.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Design and develop open lumen steerable catheters and develop foundation for future catheters.
- A significant portion of the role is hands-on catheter design, material selection and working with technicians to build and test prototypes.
- Develop test methods and models to test catheter performance.
- Develop manufacturing processes to pilot production level.
- Interface with marketing and clinical to ensure customer requirements are understood and transferred correctly to engineering specifications.
- File invention disclosures and patent applications where appropriate
- Choose new technologies and materials and identify and interact with strategic vendors to obtain engineering materials, processes, and equipment
- Perform analysis of test results in relation to design specifications to understand design capabilities to tolerances.
- Assist in debugging and optimizing system performance, on bench and in vivo studies.
QUALIFICATIONS:
-
• 6 years, minimum, experience as a catheter development engineer in the medical device industry
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Science, Master’s degree preferred.
- Extensive knowledge and proven track record of catheter design, (preferably with steerable catheters) material selection, catheter performance testing and test methods and rapid prototyping.
- Extensive knowledge of catheter manufacturing processes including extrusion, braiding, stretching, coiling, laminating, welding, thermal bonding, adhesive bonding, injection molding, forming and tipping
- Must have a demonstrated ability to effectively and clearly communicate technical concepts, ideas and knowledge to other individuals and teams.
- Strong analytical and problem solving skills, as well as a good background in the product development process.
- Hands-on prototyping skills
- Proficient in Solidworks
- Experience working with ISO requirements, GMP guidelines, FDA regulations, medical device design control, and manufacturing scale-up processes.
- Previous small-company experience a plus.
- Strong creative and innovative ability.
- An affinity for technical details and ability to deliver exceptional results in a pressured environment
